Consistently Inconsistent
Consistency is a major challenge for ChatGPT. Although the prompt is designed to elicit certain information such as [Adventure Name], [Party Name], [Start Location], and [Party Member], ChatGPT may behave slightly differently each time it is prompted. This is because ChatGPT interprets the instructions in its own unique way every time.
For example, ChatGPT may forget to generate some of the required information mentioned in the prompt. In such cases, you can try two options. First, you can ask ChatGPT to list or show the missing items, and it will offer to generate them. Alternatively, you can start a new session with a fresh prompt.

Limitations and Failures
Memory Limitations:
ChatGPT has a limit to how much information it can retain from the current conversation. Beyond that limit, information is not actively available
- ChatGPT 3.5 up to approximately 4097 tokens
- ChatGPT 4.0 up to approximately 8192 tokens
ChatGPT can retrieve prior information if a keyword combo is used that appears within the text you are trying to recall to memory. To understand more about tokens here are some resources:

Memory Failure:
Over time, ChatGPT will forget some events or rules. While the provided prompts can help you remind ChatGPT of rules, the longer your adventure, the more inconsistencies may occur. Unfortunately, we cannot remedy this within the current memory token limit.

Fantasy Date Time Failure:
Initially, we implemented a [Fantasy Timestamp] prompt to be in the lore style of the chosen ruleset. However, we encountered the:
- The date would sometimes initialize as today or initialize correctly only to forget and reset to a new date soon after.
- Inconsistencies in retaining the date format.
- It could not consistently increment time based on party activity. For example, allocating several hours to stay overnight vs. an hour shopping or gathering herbs.
- The memory requirements overshadowed the feature’s usefulness. The number of rules needed to maintain the [Fantasy Timestamp] ultimately used too many memory tokens.
- ChatGPT does not have a direct experience of time in the same way that humans do. While it can maintain a data-instructed time calculation from a conceptual perspective, it has difficulty maintaining consistency.
- Feature was not implemented for ChatGPT 4, although the token limit is higher the impact on memory adding this feature outweighs the benefits.
Ultimately, the issues led to the feature being deemed a failure and removed, to enable a longer, more enjoyable narrative.
